Sometimes when working with documents in Microsoft Word, it becomes necessary to write a number in a power, and in this article, we will talk about how this is done. You can put a degree sign in Word in several ways, and all of them are extremely simple in their implementation. We consider them in order of priority, starting with the most obvious and ending with one that is suitable for cases where, in addition to the degree sign of interest to us, it is required to write other mathematical expressions in a text document.

Method 1: superscript

There is a group of tools for working with the font on the toolbar of the Word text editor, directly in its “Main” tab. One of them will help us put the sign of the degree.

  1. Enter the number or letter (s) to be raised to a power. Set immediately after it the cursor pointer, that is, without clicking on the space bar.
  2. On the toolbar in the “Home” tab, in the “Font” parameter group, find the “Superscript” button (made in the form of an x 2 icon ) and click on it.
  3. Enter the required value of the degree and do not rush after adding it to press the space bar or enter any other characters if they should already be written not in the form of a superscript. To continue writing normally, just use the “Superscript” button (x 2 ) again. To enable or disable the superscript with which we wrote down the degree sign, you can use not only the button on the ribbon but also the key combination – “CTRL + SHIFT ++” (plus sign located in the upper digital row). In both cases, you can turn an already recorded element into a power – just select it with the mouse and “raise” it to the superscript register.

A superscript in Microsoft Word 2003

If for some reason you are still using an obsolete version of a text editor from Microsoft, you should know that the algorithm for adding a degree symbol in it is somewhat different.

  1. Enter the expression that you want to raise to the power, and also write next to it the number (or letter), which in the future should be a power. That is, in order to get the conditional 2, enter x2.
  2. Select the sign that you want to convert to a degree, and then right-click on it. In the context menu that opens, select the Font item.
  3. In the “Font” dialog box, which by default will be opened in the tab of the same name, check the box “Superscript” and click “OK”.

After setting the required degree value and removing the selection from this element (place the cursor immediately after it), re-open the Font dialog box through the context menu and uncheck the “Superscript” item. This is what will need to be done every time in order to put a degree in Word 2003.

How to type degree symbol in Word – Method 2

If using a superscript icon to write a degree doesn’t suit you for some reason, you can go a little different way – manually insert the corresponding symbol. True, looking ahead, we note that the set of such signs presented in the Word arsenal is somewhat limited.

  1. Write the variable that you want to raise to the power, set the cursor immediately after it and go to the “Insert” tab.
  2. In the “Symbols” tool group on the right, expand the menu of the “Symbol” button and select the last item – “Other symbols”.
  3. The “Symbol” dialog box will open, directly the “Symbols” tab, in which, for the convenience of searching, in the “Set” block, you must select the “Superscripts and Subscripts  option.

Note: If the “Set” option block does not appear in the “Symbol” window, in the “Font” block, select the first item in the list – “(plain text)”.

Next, select one of the degree symbols presented in the set – from 4 to 9 (this is the very restriction that we wrote about above – there are no other values in the program library). To add a character, select it and click on the “Insert” button, after which it will appear in the document at the place you specified.

Additionally. The missing minimum degree symbols (specifically square and cube – 2 and 3 ) can be found in the standard “Symbol Table” of Windows.

  1. From any screen of the operating system, call up the search window – the WIN + Skeys in Windows 10 or the call to the Start menu in older versions of the OS will help you do this (it has a search bar). Start typing the “Symbol Table” query and, as soon as you see the corresponding result in the output, click on it to start.
  2. In the window that opens, in the “Font” drop-down list, leave the default setting or, better, select the one that you use to enter the expression (which you want to raise to the power) in the document. In the list presented, find the symbol of a square or cubic degree, that is, the number 2 or 3, respectively, written in the form of a superscript.

Note: If the characters you are looking for are not available in the place shown above (the beginning of the list), it means that they are not supported by the font you selected, that is, you will need to change it to any other font that supports these characters.

  1. Having found the required character, select it by clicking LMB, then click on the “Select” button located in the lower right area of the window, and then click on the next one, which has become the active “Copy” button. The degree symbol of your choice will be placed on the clipboard, after which you will just have to paste it into the document at the right place. Use the CTRL + V keys for this.

Note: As you can see from our example above, the copied and pasted character has a standard (default) OS and Word formatting style (size and color). Therefore, if a different style is used in the document for writing a mathematical expression, it will be necessary to adjust the added degree to it. So, we had to increase the font and change the color.

If you closely followed the process of adding a degree sign by inserting characters through the Word menu of the same name, you probably noticed that they all have their own code. Knowing it, you can enter the necessary expression without resorting to the “Insert” section of the program. The degree symbols available in the standard set have the following code designations:

  • ⁴ – 2074
  • ⁵ – 2075
  • ⁶ – 2076
  • ⁷ – 2077
  • ⁸ – 2078
  • ⁹ – 2079

Most likely, you will have a question, what to do with the code of the sign so that it turns into the symbol to which it is assigned? The answer to it, the path and not the most obvious, is given in the “Symbol” window (underlined in the screenshots above). It’s simple – you enter the necessary code in the place where the degree sign should be located, and then, without indenting, press “ALT + X” on the keyboard. This magic key combination will transform a set of numbers into its corresponding degree sign.

There is just one important nuance here – we need the degree sign to go immediately after the sign that needs to be raised, but the expression, in this case, will “join” the code and its conversion will either work incorrectly or not work at all. In order to avoid this problem, it is necessary to indent (press the spacebar) from the character that will be raised to the power, enter the above code, then immediately press “ALT + X” and delete the unnecessary space between the characters. other methods to type degree symbol.
